The idea that homosexuality (and other sexual options) is a public concern is fairly new, based more on the activism of the gay community than any increase in discrimination against it. The argument was to keep government out of the bedroom, but has now moved to getting government to change from ignoring to not only accepting, but also advocating any personal sexual preferences.
